Parquet and laminate flooring: what to ask before choosing
A wood appearance does not identify a floor’s construction. When comparing parquet, laminate or another wood-look floor, ask for the exact material and product specification before comparing prices or performance.
Separate the look from the construction
A laminate floor can use a decorative surface over a layered core; a wood floor can have a real-wood surface and a different construction beneath it. Manufacturer terminology is more useful than the appearance alone. Ask whether the selected floor is laminate, solid wood, engineered wood or another material.
The word parquet may be used broadly in a showroom conversation. Ask for the specific product type, dimensions and technical sheet, rather than treating the name as a guarantee of construction. Brand and material availability should be confirmed with the showroom.
Compare colour and proportion in your room
Look at the grain, plank width and how the colour sits beside your wallpaper and furniture. A photograph on a screen is not a precise colour reference. Consider daylight, your normal room lighting and the direction from which the floor will be seen.
Bring room dimensions and photographs of the existing surface. Door openings, changes in floor level, fitted furniture and connections to other rooms can affect the fitting conversation. Ask about skirting, trims and transitions as well as the floor itself.
Check suitability from the actual specification
Water resistance, cleaning instructions, wear classification and guarantees are product-specific. Do not assume that every laminate is waterproof or that every wood-look floor is suitable for the same room. Describe how the space is used and ask the team to check the chosen product’s documented requirements.
Where moisture or another practical condition is a concern, discuss the room and existing floor before ordering. Follow the instructions supplied for the actual selected product, including the fitting and maintenance conditions relevant to its guarantee.
